Hi I’m Christin Ditchfield with Take It To Heart!
Have you ever wistfully wondered if God would ever call you to some kind of ministry? So full of gratitude for all that He’s done for you – you wish you could do great things for Him. You want to shout it from the mountaintops and tell the whole world about His amazing love. You’d be willing to make any sacrifice to demonstrate YOUR love for Him. If only He would ask you…
Mark’s gospel tells us about a young man who felt this way. He had been possessed by a legion of evil spirits. “Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.” (5:5) Then Jesus came and set him free. In an instant the demons were gone. He was no longer tortured by their presence. The townspeople were amazed when they saw the young man clothed and in his right mind, sitting at Jesus’ feet. No, more than amazed – they were terrified. They asked Jesus to go away and leave them alone.
As Jesus got into the boat, the young man begged to be allowed to go with Him. He was eager to leave everything behind and follow Jesus (something some of the other disciples had been reluctant to do). But Jesus said no. He wouldn’t let him. Instead, Jesus gave him a different assignment: “Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you.” (5:19)
Some of us are called to the mission field overseas, and some of us are called to the mission field in our own family. After all, they’re the ones who know us best – they’re the ones who see the greatest change in our lives. And their salvation is no less important to Jesus than the millions we will never meet. Though it may have seemed like a small thing, the Scripture tells us the young man did just as Jesus asked. Are we willing to do the same?
