Hi I’m Christin Ditchfield with Take It To Heart!
People often remark about that fact that we live in a youth-driven culture. A society that has little time and even less respect for the elderly. Those of us in our prime – our working years — are under a lot of pressure to get things done, and we can be impatient. After all, elderly people move slowly and drive slowly and tell stories that never end. They have a list of medical complaints as long as your arm, and they seem to find great pleasure in recounting them in the minutest detail.
We know we should respect our elders, but sometimes we’re just too busy or too frustrated or too distracted. Still, there are many reasons why the senior citizens among us should be treated with honor. Not the least of which is the one found in Leviticus 19:32. The Scripture says, “Show your fear of God by standing up in the presence of elderly people and showing respect for the aged. I am the Lord.” (NLT)
Why should we treat our elders with respect? It’s not a question of whether or not they deserve it – or if we have time. We do it because God says to. He says that when we show respect for the aged, we show respect for Him. Conversely, when we disrespect our elders, we show disrespect and contempt for God Himself.
Whether you’re at school, at work, in traffic, or running errands, make a conscious decision to show respect to every elderly person you come across today. Do it out of kindness and compassion, if you can. Because you yourself will be an elderly person one day. Or do out of fear of God, as an act of reverence and obedience to Him. Either way, just do it!
