What’s to Worry About?

Hi I’m Christin Ditchfield with Take It To Heart!

Years ago I ran across some fascinating statistics. Someone once conducted a lot of research and surveys, did some complicated in-depth analysis, and determined that of all the things we fear – of all the things we spend hours and hours worrying about:

40% will never happen

30% have already happened – things in the past you can’t change or undo

12% are health-related – ironic, since worry aggravates most health issues

10% are petty, random, miscellaneous

Leaving only 8% that are “legitimate” issues – which we’d have a lot more focus and energy and strength to address, if we weren’t wasting so much on all of the other ones!

There’s no question that all this worry and fear is absolutely toxic. It damages us mentally, physically, emotionally, relationally and spiritually. If each one of us could see our own itemized bill – if we only knew all that our fear and worry had cost us, day after day, year after year – we might take more seriously the Biblical admonitions: “Do NOT worry…. Do NOT fear.”

You know, God had good reasons – has good reasons – for repeating those words hundreds of times in Scripture. He loves us. He wants what’s best for us. And what’s best for us is not to be consumed with worry. Not to live in fear.

Here’s a powerful reminder from the New Living Translation of Romans 8:38-39:

“I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.”(italics added for emphasis)
