Fight to the Finish

It was one of the longest wrestling matches on record. The two powerful men grappled back and forth, each one determined to be the victor in a battle that lasted through the night. By daybreak, one of the men realized that there was something supernatural about his mysterious opponent. The man’s power and strength were, well, inhuman.

As the sun rose, this opponent suddenly decided to call it quits. “Let me go,” he said. But after wrestling with him all night long, Jacob realized he had grabbed on to Someone special. He wasn’t about to release his hold. Instead, Jacob insisted, “I will not let you go until you bless me.” (Genesis 32:36)

Jacob’s determination and persistence – not to mention perception – was rewarded. His opponent replied, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel – because you have struggled with God and with men and have overcome.” (Genesis 32:28)

Through the long, cold night, Jacob had been wrestling with God Himself. God had tested him. And Jacob had passed the test. In the end, he received the blessing he sought, because he wouldn’t let go. He wouldn’t give in. He wouldn’t give up.

Sooner or later, every one of us will find ourselves face to face with a challenge that tests us to our very limits. In 1 Timothy 6:12, the Apostle Paul urged all of us to “Fight the good fight of faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called.”

Are you wrestling with something in your life today? Is there a temptation too strong, a crisis too great, a challenge that seems insurmountable? Don’t be discouraged. You can pass this test. Keep at it! Ask God to give you strength – and don’t let go, until He blesses you!
