A Lot Like Us

Hi I’m Christin Ditchfield and this is Take It To Heart!

When the newness of our relationship with Christ fades, we’re often disappointed to discover that it’s not all hearts and flowers – blessings and answers to prayer. Relationships (even Divine ones) take work. There’s discipline involved…sacrifice and sometimes even suffering. If we don’t put in the effort to keep the love alive, our hearts will grow cold. And then our eyes begin to wander. That’s when we fall for the world and its charms. We’re constantly bombarded with temptation. It’s all around us. Soon we’re seduced by the promise of pleasure beyond measure, and without pain or sacrifice.

We aren’t the only ones to find ourselves in this place…

At first Lot was shocked by the wickedness of the world around him. After a while, he got used to it. Then he stopped noticing it. One day he woke up to discover that he had become a part of it — and it a part of him. This is how a righteous man could be “oppressed by the filthy conduct of the wicked” (2 Peter 3:7) and yet not be able to tear himself away from it. “While he lingered, the men took hold of his hand and brought him out.” (Genesis 19:16) He left his heart in Sodom and Gomorrah…

Some of us can relate. As disgusted as we are by the wickedness of the world around us, we’ve fallen in love with it. The thought of separating from it tears us up inside… Over and over in the Scriptures, God calls us to remember His faithfulness to us – and to love Him faithfully, wholeheartedly in return. Regardless of what the world promises, there is no love, no peace, no joy, no sense of purpose or satisfaction or fulfillment apart from Him. Don’t make the same mistake as Lot. Remember why you first fell in love with Jesus, choose to fall in love with Him again, and show the world the door.
