Hi I’m Christin Ditchfield and this is Take It To Heart!
Luke 10:38 tells the story of two sisters who made two different choices when it came to the way they honored a very special houseguest. Martha was thrilled to have the opportunity to play hostess to Jesus and His disciples. She went all out with the preparations, determined to have everything “just so.” And who could blame her? This was, after all, a momentous occasion. But in the midst of the hustle and bustle, her sister Mary was conspicuously absent.
Instead of helping Martha turn their humble abode into House Beautiful, Mary was just lounging around – or so it seemed to Martha. She found Mary sitting at Jesus’ feet, listening to Him as He taught His disciples. Naturally, Martha was furious at Mary’s “laziness” and she complained to Jesus about it. “Tell her to come and help me!”
But Jesus didn’t rebuke Mary – he rebuked Martha: “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better…” (Luke 10:42)
Now there’s nothing wrong with keeping your house in order, or with taking special care to make a guest feel welcome. But in her attempt at domestic perfection, Martha had gotten carried away, distracted by all the details. In doing so, she had neglected her guest – the very person for whom all the preparations were intended. She was busy doing FOR Him, instead of being WITH Him.
We need to be careful not to make that same mistake. We musn’t get so busy doing for God that we neglect to spend time with Him. That precious love relationship is the reason He created us in the first place. Nothing could be more important for us today!
