Stewards, Not Saviors

Hi I’m Christin Ditchfield and this is Take It To Heart!

Years ago, someone wrote a book called 365 Ways You Can Save the Earth. Not to be outdone, someone else published 750 Ways to Save Our Planet. There are dozens of websites devoted to the subject – and thousands, if not millions, of people now celebrate Earth Day every year. But with no disrespect to any of these well-intentioned folks, the truth is, there is not a single thing you or I can do to “save the earth.” We don’t have that kind of power!

No, we’re not capable of being earth’s saviors, but we ARE called to be its stewards. Remember God’s instructions to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden? Our creator has given this amazing and wonderful world to us. As long as it exists, we’re to take good care of it.

At the same time, we can’t forget that our planet’s destiny has already been established by its Creator – the Almighty God, Maker of Heaven and Earth. The Bible tells us that the universe was formed at His command. (Hebrews 11:3) Revelation 21 explains that God has already ordained a day and time when this world will be destroyed – replaced by a glorious new heaven and new earth. We just don’t know when that will be …

So when we use our resources responsibly, when we take care not to pollute our environment – it’s not because we’re trying to “save the earth,” but because we’re trying to be good stewards. We do it out of respect for God and His marvelous creation – respect for each other – and those who may come after us.
