Hi I’m Christin Ditchfield and this is Take It To Heart!
The Scriptures tell us that when the world was young, people lived a lot longer than they do today. In fact, prior to the Flood, most men lived to be over 900 years old — with one notable exception: in Genesis 5:21 we read about Enoch. Enoch’s father lived to be 962; Enoch’s son, 969. But Enoch lived only 365 years — a third of the lifespan of the rest of the family. What happened?
Genesis 5:26 explains, “Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.” As my childhood Bible story books put it, Enoch walked so closely with God that – one day – he walked right into heaven. God was so delighted with Enoch that he couldn’t wait to have him experience the fullness of His presence. So He took him.
Hebrews 11:5 tells us: “By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death; he could not be found, because God had taken him away. For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God.”
What an incredible honor – what a remarkable relationship Enoch shared with God! As a child, I remember reading about Enoch and longing to have that kind of relationship. I wanted to have a special place in God’s heart, the way Enoch did. I still do.
It’s not just about loving God or being loved by Him – it’s having a deeper passion, a truer commitment, an unshakeable faith in Him, that goes above and beyond that of the complacent crowd. Let’s all strive to live our lives in such a way that we, too, will be commended as “ones who pleased God.”
