Flowers or Weeds

A wise person once said, “Your mind is a garden, your thoughts are the seeds; the harvest can either be flowers or weeds.”

It expresses a profound truth: The thoughts that we dwell on – the ones that we allow to take root – shape who we are and who we will become. Eventually they will determine the choices we make and the actions we take. Proverbs 23:7 says, “As a man think in his heart, so is he.”

If we choose to dwell on ourselves, our needs and wants, our wishes, we will become selfish, petty, small-minded people. If we choose to dwell on our hurts and resentments, we will become bitter, angry people. If we choose to dwell on our fears, we will become nervous, anxious, faithless people. If we choose to dwell on our sinful desires, we will fall into temptation time and time again. That’s why 2 Corinthians 10:5 warns us to “take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ.”

Colossians 3:2 says, “Set your minds on things above, not onearthly things.” Philippians 4:8 says, “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy, think about such things.”

That’s how we grow in Christian maturity. It’s how we learn to walk in victory over the flesh. It’s how we learn to prefer one another in love. It’s how we learn to give thanks in all things. It’s how we build our faith and experience the peace of God that passes all understanding. The peace that will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

It’s how we reap a harvest of flowers, not weeds!
